School Wide Outing
The annual school wide picnic at Camp Plymouth is scheduled for Thursday, June 18th. We plan to be at the park when it opens at 10 a.m. for swimming and other fun activities. We will start serving lunch (hamburgers and hot dogs cooked on the grill) around 11:30 for K – grade 2 and 12 noon for grades 3 – 6. We will plan to leave the park around 2 p.m. for the trip back to school. Of course we are planning on a beautiful sunny day, but if the weather predictions are for rain on Thursday and the forecast is nice for Wednesday, June 17th we will switch the picnic day to Wednesday. We do realize that the “rain date” is before the preferred date, but we do so to offer some flexibility for the best weather on our outing day. This final school wide event for
the year is open to families as well. You will need to pay the nominal admission to the park for your families and either sign up for the cookout or bring a picnic lunch. If you wish to stay later than 2 p.m. and want your child to stay with you, please let his/her teacher know prior to departure time. Please be advised that the park is a “carry in, carry out” park which means that there are no trash cans and you are expected to take out all of your trash when you leave the park.
Sixth Grade Graduation
The sixth grade will be graduating from CTES on Wednesday evening, June 17th at 6:30 p.m. at the beautiful Proctorsville Green. Although there will be some chairs set up on the grass, we encourage you to bring your lawn chairs and/or blankets so you can be comfortable and enjoy the activity. We also suggest you bring along some bug spray! After the ceremony, we invite you to join the graduates for some cake and light refreshments. If the weather is inclement, the program will be held in the multipurpose room at the school.
Full Day of School Tuesday, June 16
We will be having a full day of school on Tuesday June 16 and a half-day of school on Friday, June 19. Students will be dismissed on Friday immediately after the Move Up day activities if their parents are there or at 12:30 if they are taking the bus home.
Last Day of School – Move Up Day
We will be having our annual end of year assembly on Friday, June 19 at 10 a.m. During the program, awards and certificates will be given out to students as well as scholarships for summer camps. It is also the time when our many volunteers are recognized and the Golden Apple Award is given out. The sixth grade will recite their class prophecy, sing their class song, and then march out of the school for the last time as sixth graders. Each of the classes will move up to take their places in the next grade. The children joining us in the fall as new kindergarteners will take a seat with their teacher for the first time. It is a fun assembly, and we invite all parents, families and volunteers to join us at 10 a.m.
First Day of School
The First Day of school for the 2009-10 school year will be a half-day on Tuesday, September 1. We look for another great year after a restful summer.
Home Grown Vegetables for CTES
The Nutrition Committee of the school has been encouraging the use of fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables at the school. They have been asking families and community members to grow a row of vegetables for the school. The committee is planning to take home grown vegetables that are harvested during the summer and freeze them so that we can enjoy them during the winter months. Packets of vegetable seeds were given out to many community members, students and their families. If you took seeds and are growing vegetables for the school, please let either Sara Stowell (226-7439 sarastowell@tds.net) or Julia Gignoux (484-9280 fhdesign@sover.net) know so they can coordinate freezing of the items. We are planning to have a freezing party a couple times during the summer as needed. Space has been located to store frozen foods and to store root vegetables in cold storage. We are grateful to all who are helping with this endeavor. Please also let Sara or Julia know if you are able to help on the freezing day. The
Department of Nutrition requires that preparation and freezing of the vegetables take place at the school. Thanks in advance for your help.
“Landscapes of Cavendish”
The second annual Cavendish Photo Contest is taking place at CTES during the final week of school. Approximately 30 photographers, some accomplished and some novice, have submitted photographs for the contest. The winning photographs will be featured in the 2010 Cavendish Community Calendar. During the week, students and adults will have a chance to look at the photo gallery and cast their vote for the best photo. Voting will take place every day during school hours for students, parents and teachers. Voting for the public will take place on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, June 17, 18, 19 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, June 20 from 1 to 4 p.m. We hope you will stop by the school, view the entries and then cast your vote.
Have a Wonderful Summer!
WESTON PLAYHOUSE PRESENTS STUART LITTLE
~
The Weston Playhouse Theatre Company presents its fifth annual production for families, the E. B. White classic Stuart Little. Playing from June 23 through July 5 at family friendly times and without charge, the show will be performed on Weston’s Village Green before touring to outdoor locations across the state. Young families and the young-at-heart alike will delight at this imaginative story in which a mild-mannered mouse seeks to survive in a “real people’s world.”
Based on White’s 1945 children’s book and popularized over the years by a series of films and television events, Stuart Little is a charming 60-minute play about an adventuresome boy who was born as a mouse into an ordinary New York family. All the charm, wisdom and joy of the original story are captured in this adaptation by Joseph Robinette, who also dramatized the highly acclaimed stage version of another White classic, Charlotte’s Web.
The various human and animal roles in Stuart Little are played by Weston’s Young Company, a diverse group of performers chosen by audition from the nation’s top undergraduate musical theatre programs. The 2009 Young Company includes Craig Fogel from NYU/CP 21, Katy Karr and Norman Payne from Pace University, Nadine Malouf from Syracuse University, Jenny Powell from the Boston Conservatory and returning from last year, Paul Rawlings from Baldwin-Wallace College. The Young Company will be seen throughout the summer in the popular after-hours Act IV Cabaret and in the Weston MainStage Production of Rent.
Stuart Little will be directed by Susan Haefner, who appeared in the Broadway productions of 42nd Street and Thoroughly Modern Millie and is well-known to Weston audiences for roles in such favorites as The King and I, Ragtime and john & jen. Assisting Haefner will be Scenic Designer Ryann Lee, a past WPTC Production Manager and 2009 Props Manager; Costume Designer Crystal Herman, who will be this summer’s Costume Shop Manager; and Stage Manager Bekah Wachenfield.
“Stuart Little is an endearing and humorous play which Vermont audiences will love,” said Haefner, who last year directed a production of You Can’t Take it With You at Castleton State College. “We are especially excited to share Stuart Little and the talented Young Company with audiences in multiple locations throughout the state.”
A free performance of Stuart Little has been scheduled for Cavendish Town Elementary School at 1:30 PM on Tuesday, June 23. Reservations are not needed. The performance is scheduled to be outside, but will move into the multipurpose room if it rains. For additional information, call the Playhouse box office at 802-824-5288 or visit the theatre’s website at www.westonplayhouse.org.~ The performance lasts approximately one hour without intermission.
