School Closing/Delay Announcements
On days that school needs to be canceled due to snow or another emergency, announcements will be broadcast over radio stations WJJR (98.1 FM) WRUT (97.1 FM), KIXX (101.7 FM), WCFR (1480 AM) and Q106 (106 FM). School closings will also be displayed on the channel 3 WCAX television station broadcast from Burlington. Closings will also be posted on the school web site http;//ctes.wswsu.org under “Emergency Information” and at www.sover.net/schoolclosings. The decision as to whether it is safe or feasible for buses to run to the schools is made by the Superintendent of Schools. The announcement will refer to our school as Cavendish Town Elementary School.
In the case of early dismissal due to inclement weather or building emergency, parents will be notified in advance so no child will be left stranded. The emergency forms provide you with an opportunity to list a safe home for your child in this case. If you cannot be reached directly, a call will be made to the safe home person.
Delayed Opening Procedures
Based upon weather forecasts the school may have a Delayed Opening whenever possible instead of canceling school. A delayed opening, should we ever use it, would work like this:
• An announcement of a “Two Hour Delayed Opening” will be made in the same manner as NO SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENT described above.
•The school buses will run as scheduled, only 2 hours later.
•The school building would open for students at 9:55. No student should be dropped off at the school before 9:55 as there would be no adult supervision before that time. School would officially start at 10:10. There would not be any morning recess.
• We would serve no breakfast on delayed opening days. We would adhere to our usual lunch schedules, although the menu may need to be adjusted. Recesses would be modified.
• Dismissal would be at the regular time (2:45) and students will be transported home by bus.
•If poor weather occurred on a day scheduled in the calendar for early release (i.e., Tuesdays), we would simply cancel that day and have no delayed opening.
Please be aware that on a day which was announced initially as a “Two Hour Delayed Opening” because of continuing poor weather we may have to cancel. Such a decision would be made by 8:00 a.m. On a day announced as a delayed opening, please do not leave your child unattended in the event that we need to change the delayed opening to a cancel. We also encourage you to teach your child what to do if they ever were left in your home unattended or arrived home and found no one there.
