Namaste’
( means Hello and Goodbye in India )
We’ve had a wonderful time learningabout India! (We hope some of that has been shared at home). The boys weresomewhat short changed as the girls got jeweled “bendies and bangles”, althougheveryone got mehendi (the henna tattoo). We learned that India has bothcultural similarities and differences from our American culture through books, music, games, art/crafts and artifacts. On Wednesday, the whole school was treated to“A Taste of India”, which consisted of Mango lassis and garlic naan dipped inmasala sauce (the naan was a big hit!).
Science
Our plant unit iscomplete and our seedlings have gone home to be planted. We learned that two hoursof light was not enough to grow a healthy plant. We also learned a cup of watera day is too much, as it washed out or drowned the plants. We found that pottingsoil is better than sand, and topsoil is best for growing healthy flowers.
The warm days of summer are ahead, wehope you will plan some fun outings with your family. While on those outings, pleasetake some time to explore the natural world around you. Perhaps a scienceexperiment will crop up from a question your child asks. Wonderful learningopportunities lay ahead each day, grasp them with open arms.
Reading Opportunities
Weencourage all FANS students to take advantage of the summer library readingprogram that Mrs. Welch is offering to students. New readers must continue toread over the summer months in order to maintain the gains they have recentlymade. FANS teachers have given Mrs. Welch information that will aid her inhelping each first and second grader choose books that will enable them tomaintain or improve their current reading skills. Remember the old saying, “Ifyou don’t use it, you loose it!”
In closing,we hope you all have a great summer and we will see you again at the end ofAugust!
